(I was under the impression that I was asked to write a poem about Florida for a publication, so I went ahead and did so. But, it turns out this particular project is not theme-specific. In the meanwhile, I had written a poem about this subject and I thought, why not share it with all of you! It also specified a required length so it’s not very long.
Enjoy!)
Florida
palm fronds galore...
a native Floridian
I am not
although perhaps after over two
decades
in this state replete with
sunshine and
moon glow
hibiscus blooming in
winter
oceanside views
and water tributaries
everywhere
I should at least consider myself
a fortunate long term
transplant
this life has provided me with
global wanderings and
residences
from Brazil to India
to the French West Indies
to name just a few
and I have chosen Florida
(or perhaps, she, me)
for this extended residency
hibiscus
sunshine
and darting lizards
Florida has offered me home and hearth
and for this I am
grateful
